Harnish Auto Family’s Hot Rod & Custom Show
Story by David Marin

Chris Brown, Vice President of the Harnish Auto Family, is passionate about his job, but not so passionate that it defines who he is. That’s because he sells cars for a living, but his passion is imbeded in older American, vintage cars.

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve been interested in American muscle,” he says. “Today’s cars are what I sell, but old American street rods are what catch my eye.”

So several years ago Chris was a spectator at a major car show in Washington which prompted an observation.

“I couldn’t help but notice that the guys that were bringing the cars were paying to be in the show,” Chris continues. “I mean, the cars are the show and there wouldn’t be a show without them, it just doesn’t make sense. Plus, they pay to get in, then they’re charged ridiculous prices for a soda pop or hamburger or whatever.”

Not long after that revelation Chris hooked up with longtime gearhead Larry Hanson. He explained to Larry that he wanted to do a car show. A free car show. Not only a free car show, but a free car show that fed the participants and included non-stop entertainment, all kinds of goodies, trophies, and a t-shirt too!

“I just wanted to do something to honor the people who participate in the hobby with their cars,” Chris continues. “Larry is who really made it happen, we are extremely grateful to him for his guidance and effort.”

With all this said, Chris does hope to garner some return on the considerable expense of putting on the show.

“All we hope for is an opportunity,” he says. “Next time they’re thinking new car, I’d like to have the opportunity to provide both sales and service.”

Seems like a more than reasonable request and with dealerships closing their doors, it’s good to know that the Harnish Auto Family (and they really are a family) has been around for 30-plus years. They’re dealers for Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Subaru, Saturn, and of course, Lincoln/Mercury.

You’ll find the Harnish Auto Family on River Road in Puyallup. Stop by, say hi, and if you’re thinking new car, check’em out. We’ll hope to see you there in 2010!
